Lipsticks based on outfit color

Most of us have been in the place where we have a bevy of choice of lipsticks but would go blank after putting on our favorite outfit, unable to decide which color lipstick should be picked up. Picking the perfect shade that complements your outfit is essential to make your look complete. And here we are to help you give you some classic combinations that are fool proof to style your outfits to your lipstick shades.

White

Shades of whites, pale nudes, ivory an off whites are perhaps one of the easiest bunch to work with when it comes to picking a lipstick shade. The beauty of these shades of outfits is that the lipstick shade you pick can dramatically change your look. For instance, if you pick a pale pink lip color, it immediately gives you an overall soft look which is cherubic at best. Conversely, you can go for a Red lipstick in warmer shade that is a timeless classic. If you want to be summer ready and want to go bright but not want to lean over to either of the extremes, then bright orange works perfectly. The choice is endless with this one.

Yellow

A happy color such as yellow would need an equally beautiful and bright lip shade that would enhance your look. What better than pinks and reds that will complement this look? Red and yellow would never go out of style and would be one combination you can opt for when in doubt. Shades of Red would be perfect if you want to look chic and mature. Choose shades of pink to go with your yellow outfit if you want to opt a more youthful look. You can also stick with the thumb rule yet deviate from the classics by going towards different shades such as maroon, fuchsia, magenta etc. in pink and red family.

Blue

This is perhaps the one place where you look for complementary colors such as orange, since orange and blue are the perfect example of being complementary but often different colors in the color wheel. Opposites attract, anyone? Since these two are contrasting colors, any shade in either of the families would make you stand out and would redefine your look. If you are not a fan of adventure or an orange lip shade, and want to play safe, you could also try a flirty pink shade which is our best bet since it is a universally flattering color that goes on all skin tones.

Green

We would suggest to go with nude shades of lipstick for this one, and let the Green in your dress stand out. We suggest Maybelline’s clay crush, which a warmer shade of a nude lip color that will be a perfect choice, with a beautiful matte finish. However, if you want to go for a brighter and bolder look, what better but to opt for a cool-toned red lip color?

Red

We get it if you are confused about this one. It isn’t as obvious as it sounds. While Red on Red seems like a great choice, it does open up a million questions, about the shade that you could choose or even the niggling doubt if it would be an overkill. Trust us, red on red is a staple combination which has been seen several times on the red carpet. It is for sure a bold choice and would complement your outfit and will elevate it, making you look stylish effortlessly. However, we suggest you keep the rest of your makeup subtle for your red lips taking the lime light and for them to be the show stopper.

If you are not a fan of matching lipstick to the exact shade of your dress color, however, you can choose a nude lipstick that will refocus the attention on the outfit. We suggest to always choose a lip color that is a couple of shades darker than your skin tone to prevent a washed out look.

Black

Perhaps the one color that dominates a lot of our closets, black is a universal color that only accentuates any color you choose to pick. Either you choose to go bold with a hot pink shade or try for the sophisticated look that deep plums or burgundies offer. Have we all not heard of the classic little black dress with a deep red lipstick that is perfect for dinner parties or night outs? It never gets old and rightfully so.

Gold

This is a tricky one since the outfit color is bright and hence what you choose to wear as a lip color more or less depends on the makeup choices you make to determine the look. For instance, if you chose a bolder look with the likes of smoky and winged eyeliners with bronze eyeshadow et al, you would go a bit subtle with the lip color by choosing either nude shades or lighter shades of pink to complement and bring focus on your outfit and the rest of the makeup.

Pink

Again, it is not as obvious as it seems. Although yes, you would choose shades of pink for a pink outfit, the family of pinks are so huge and varying that you would have to pair them carefully based on the shade of your outfit. For example, if your outfit is in the shades of fuchsia, hot pink or candy floss, you are better off with choosing soft oranges, peachy pinks or even deep reds. For pale pink dresses however, you can go with the same sub-family of pinks and choose pale pinks, peach or nude shades.

Of course like always, makeup is personalized and it is very specific to you. Either you want to go subtle with shades of nude or want to go bold with complimentary shades like those of specified above, the underlying rule is to pick something that enhances your confidence and brings out the beauty that is already within you. Find the shades that match your undertones and do not hesitate to experiment.
