TV Show Makeup Musts

The world of makeup can be rather daunting. There are so many styles, trends and products that it can be hard to keep up. In this post, we discuss tv shows which feature character makeup looks so good that you will just have to try them out for yourself!

Euphoria

TV Show Makeup Musts Euphoria

If you haven’t heard of Euphoria before then you’ve been living under a rock! This show took the HBO streaming channel by storm, racking up record levels of viewers – averaging a phenomenal 16.3million viewers per episode. This hit show follows the lives of a group of American high school students as they deal with relationships, trauma, personal identity and love.

Most viewers will be tuned in for the addictive plot and exceptional performances given by the likes of Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer and Alexa Demie. However, you will also quickly notice the unique and stand-out makeup looks throughout the show. The show’s chief makeup artist, Doniella Davy, has become a household name amongst beauty aficionados – with her even starting her own makeup line due to popular demand!

What makes Euphoria’s makeup different from other shows is that it’s not afraid to be ‘out there’. The characters are very unique in their own personal identities and this is heavily reflected by what they wear and how they style their makeup. For example, Jules, a rather eccentric but loveable character, styles her makeup using bright coloured, glittery eyeshadows and bedazzled brows:

The dramatic makeup looks started a global trend, with many of us buying colours and products much different to our usual culprits. Fun fact; if you search ‘tv shows with good makeup’ into Google Images, the first three pictures that appear are all different characters from Euphoria. So don’t miss out on this great show and its many makeup looks.

Glow

Set in the eighties in LA, Glow is a comedy-drama series about the glitter-filled and spandex-full world of women’s wrestling. Since the first season, the show has featured strong, bold, and glittery makeup looks. And in the second season, they simply added more glitter and sparkle! We absolutely love how bold and outrageous these makeup looks are – without looking too silly or out of place. This show completely mastered the dramatic makeup look.

The makeup department revealed that they used ‘classics’ to create the bold looks. Such classics included MAC and Make Up For Ever eyeshadows and lipsticks. However, the MUAs also noted using highly pigmented colours to create such drastic eye makeup looks. They mix many shades together and add sparkle on top. We quite like how they explained that the goal is not to look perfect, but rather natural and real.

Gossip Girl

Arguably one of the most iconic teen shows of the 2000s, Gossip Girl served as fashion and makeup inspiration for many of us. This series followed the lives of rich teens living in the Upper East Side of New York City. Notably, the show displayed the exuberant wealth and lifestyles of Manhattan’s ‘elite’. For most of us viewers, the brands shown in the show are slightly out of our beauty budget 😉 That being said, one thing we can always rely on is recreating amazing makeup looks at a fraction of the price.

One of our favourite makeup transformations in the show was by none other than Jenny Humphrey. The Upper East Side wannabe went through quite a character change in the many seasons of Gossip Girl. She had her ultimate transformation at the end of season 3, where she retired her preppy, innocent look for a much more dark and gothic style. Standing out from lead characters Serena and Blair (who donned light, peachy-coloured tones and bright red lipsticks), Jenny opted for a much darker statement lipstick and eyeshadow look.

Pretty Little Liars

TV Show Makeup Musts

Last, but certainly not least, on our list is the teen-girl classic, Pretty Little Liars. This show is a crime/thriller/mystery which follows the lives of four teenage girls; Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily. Each character is so different from the next that this show gave us LOADS of makeup styles to copy.

If you find yourself closely aligned to character Aria then you should opt for a slightly grungy makeup look. She often wore dark eyeshadow, thick mascara, and blended eyeliner.

Or, maybe you’re more of a preppy Spencer type? This character’s makeup is fairly simple and classic. Makeup is used to accentuate her natural beauty, with an importance placed on creating a ‘soft’ look. A little eyeliner, some neutral-toned shimmer on your eyelids, mascara, and a light tint of colour on your lips and you’ll nail her makeup look.

If you are more of a party girl then Hannah has the makeup look for you. With possibly the most daring makeup out of the girls, Hannah often goes for a bright lip and eyeshadow. She typically chooses bright colours for her lips (for example, pink or coral). Whereas she lines her eyes with a light dark pencil eyeliner, which she blends in to help her eyes pop.

Or if you’re more of a sporty type, then you might find Emily is your makeup twin. Bronzed and beautiful, her character’s makeup is more about warm tones and subtle highlights. A strong contour with bronze colours and an accent highlight is all you need to accentuate your natural beauty.
