What is SPF?

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measurement used to determine how effective a suncream will be at protecting your skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. There are two types of dangerous UV rays. They cause harm by damaging the DNA in skin cells. In the worst case scenario, this can lead to skin cancer. Therefore, it is extremely important that we protect our skin from both types:

UVB: Have you ever stayed out a little too long in the sun and felt the ‘burny’ consequences in the evening? This is caused by UVB rays. They play a key role in sunburn and lead to the development of skin cancer. When you see a number following ‘SPF’ on a suncream bottle (e.g. SPF30) this typically refers to the level of UVB protection you will receive. The higher the factor, the greater the amount of protection.

UVA: The effect of UVA rays are more commonly accepted as they lead to tanning.  Whilst a tan might look physically appealing, this is still a form of skin damage and can lead to premature skin ageing and wrinkles. The negative impact of UVA can also present as sunburn. This occurs when skin is exposed to shorter wavelengths of UVA rays. When looking at a bottle of suncream you might notice the words “broad spectrum” written. This indicates that the suncream has ingredients designed to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. We recommend you purchase this type of suncream for maximum protection.

What is SPF makeup?

So, where does makeup come into all of this? Well most complexion makeup (such as foundation) comes with some level of SPF protection. Given a lot of people wear makeup daily, this is an appealing option to receive protection whilst not necessarily going out of your way to put it on. However, is this enough to protect your skin from sun damage?

Is makeup SPF enough on its own?

According to SkinCancer.net, SPF is only effective when used properly and thoroughly. For example, to guarantee maximum protection it is recommended to use a minimum of 5ml (one teaspoon) to each area of your body. Considering how little foundation/moisturiser you actually need to cover your whole face – it quickly becomes apparent that this level of in-built SPF is not enough for full protection.

What do we recommend?

The best way to ensure you are fully protected from harmful UV rays is to consider makeup and SPF as separate products. We understand this is a little frustrating and less-efficient, but your skin will thank you for it – we promise 😉

How to apply SPF when wearing makeup?

It is understandable to not know when to apply SPF to your daily makeup routine. But don’t worry! We consulted with experts and have the solution for you. The best order for your daily routine is to apply your skincare first. For example, your toners, serums and moisturiser. A lot of which might already contain some SPF. Then apply your high-SPF suncream. It is recommended to aim for a minimum of SPF30, but preferably you should choose to wear SPF50. Lastly, you would apply your makeup as normal on top.

Now, you might be wondering if this is enough to protect you throughout the day. Unfortunately, SPF protection only lasts for a few hours. You would therefore be required to reapply throughout the day. Here comes the issue… how do you reapply without ruining your full face of makeup?

Can you apply SPF over makeup?

You absolutely can apply SPF over your makeup. There are two ways we would recommend. The first option is to use a beauty blender sponge and dab suncream over your makeup. Choosing a good sponge and suncream is vital if you don’t want your makeup to be affected by this. We recommend:

Real Techniques Beauty Blender

Real Techniques Sponge +

The second option is to use a spray SPF suncream. In our opinion, this is the most effective way of getting that vital protection without impacting makeup when applying. Our recommendation for spray SPF is:

Garnier Ambre Solaire Over-Makeup Mist

Ambre Solaire Over-Makeup Super UV

What about my lips?

An area of your skin typically forgotten about when it comes to sun protection, it is still very important to protect your lips. The sad reality is that you can get skin cancer anywhere – even in areas you might not expect. This is why it is extremely important to wear an SPF lip-balm to protect the often neglected part of your face. It is our opinion that a lot of lipsticks don’t advertise SPF as a product benefit, so please be careful when picking effective lip makeup.

(P.S. If you’re going on a summer getaway, we highly recommend these packing cubes to store your SPF and makeup when travelling).
