Met Gala Makeup Musts 2022
What is the Met Gala?
The Met Gala has been around since 1948. It began as a means to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which remains the same to this day. It is one of the biggest annual events in fashion, celebrities, and culture.
Initially, well-known fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert founded the event. It was hosted in venues such as Central Park, the Rainbow Room, and the Waldorf Astoria. However, it wasn’t until Diana Vreeland took over as chief consultant that the Met became what it is today. She changed the venue of the Met Gala to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and incorporated gala themes. Currently, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour runs the benefits, guest-list of attendees, and the theme.
The theme of each annual Met Gala is to be reflected in the attendees outfits. For example, the 2018 theme was ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’.
Blake Lively (pictured above) followed the theme perfectly. However, more recent themes such as ‘The Gilded Age’ saw a lot of celebrities wearing outfits that didn’t match the theme. For example, Kylie Jenner wore an all-white bridal gown to this year’s theme, even though it didn’t exactly match the topic of the year. The Gilded Age was a time in which the United States experienced economic growth, overtaking the United Kingdom in leading industrialisation.
Makeup and the Met
Given the importance placed upon the dress code, it was essential that makeup looks were made to match their extravagant outfits. This makes the Met Gala the perfect place to find inspiration for your next makeup look.
We’ll now take a look at some of the makeup styles throughout this year’s event, and discuss our favourites.
Emma Chamberlain (Met Gala 2022)
Young YouTube star Emma Chamberlain pulled out all the stops at this year’s Met. She attended as an interviewer to the stars, on behalf of Vogue. That didn’t stop her from looking as magnificent as the guests on the red carpet – in fact, if you ask us, she outshone most of them! Emma chose a burnt orange-coloured smokey eye. A gold layer of almost foil-like glitter was added on top. This really made her blue eyes stand out and matched her outfit totally. It was really nice to see such vibrant eyeshadow tones used for someone who has light-coloured eyes. She also opted for a more natural brow look. We think she’s used a lamination gel and maybe a light shade of product.
We recommend the NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette if you’re looking to recreate a similar, sparkly and smokey eyeshadow look.
Kiki Layne (Met Gala 2022)
Actress Kiki Layne had possibly the most beautiful mix of pink clothes, accessories, and makeup we’ve ever seen! Whilst we don’t personally think her outfit was on theme this year, we can’t help but admire it just the same. Her makeup displayed ‘soft glamour’. Her foundation and contour was subtle, but her strong use of blush beautifully accented her high cheekbones. Ultimately, it was her eye makeup that stole the show. Her eyelids featured flower petals from her dress, matching colours perfectly. We think this is such a brilliant and unique way of expressing your style through eye makeup. Rather than the typical eyeshadow, her choice to have physical pieces of her dress was nothing less than brilliant.
We recommend Rimmel London’s 3-Shade Contour Palette if you want to pull off her brilliant contour and blush look.
Gigi Hadid (Met Gala 2022)
Model Gigi Hadid rocked red on the red carpet! Her bold, blood red lip was something you couldn’t miss. Most makeup artists would agree that a strong red lip is always in style. Interestingly, Gigi’s makeup artists opted to use only Maybelline products. This makes her makeup look extremely affordable. Her makeup on the evening featured a stand-out ombre two-toned lip, whilst her skin was quite natural looking with some light contouring. This helped her red lip stand out.

The Met Gala has some of the biggest names in the media attending yearly. It’s always an exciting time when the theme is revealed and you then see the celebrities interpretation of this shown in their fashion and makeup. Personally, we like to look at which celebrities are on-theme and which have gone way off track. The best laughs can be found on Twitter, where you can follow the live-tweets of the night and hear everyone’s opinions on all the styles and makeup looks.
